Codeberg e.V. is entering its seventh year. We have grown in projects and members but also in organizational structure and money.
While Codeberg e.V. was spending only about 300 € in 2019, our budgeting has reached much higher amounts by now. We are grateful for your donations and spend them for the maximum positive impact on the project. Now, we are approaching a public communication of our budgets for the first time.
This is an exciting moment for us. We are looking forward to positive reactions, but of course we also anticipate questions and criticism and will surely learn a lot from this step.
We know that other projects have other approaches to working with money. For us, there are a few things to be proud of:
- Funding diversity: No large sponsor, no venture capital fund, and no big customer can put pressure on our direction. Backed by 1691 paying members and many additional donations, we can focus on what's best for our users.
- Funding humans: The people behind the project are what make Codeberg great, and we're proud about our efforts to solve the human scaling problem by compensating great contributors. Every line of code written by them benefits the free/libre software ecosystem, not a proprietary silo.
- Frugal spending and control: Codeberg e.V. is a non-profit, and there are procedures for controlling the expenses. There is no "owner" who can take the profits; the budget plan is voted on by all active members, and cash auditors control that the actual spending is in line with the bylaws.
Transparent communication
The budgets and yearly reports have always been accessible to members of Codeberg e.V., and a lot of Codeberg users trust them to do the right thing. However, we want to take a next step and be more transparent about our funding and future plans.
During the last annual assembly, it was discussed and later decided to communicate yearly reports and budgets to the public, and we expect that quite a few of our users will be digging curiously through the tables and budget sheets.
Going forward, we will use the Codeberg-e.V./Documents-Public repository to publish financial documents. Take a look at the budget plan for 2026 combined with a list of supplementary information. We will keep filling the repository with more information over the next months and publish new documents after they are reviewed and accepted by the annual assembly.
This is only a start but still marks an important step in the evolution of our project and its commitment to transparency.
